Bilder Johann Christoph Bock (1752–1830) – Das einhornige Nashorn (The One-horned Rhinoceros) – Hand-coloured etching (1775)
Beskrivning
"Das einhornige Nashorn" depicts an Indian rhinoceros in profile, characterized by its thick, plate-like skin folds, accompanied by a separate anatomical study of its tongue. This hand-coloured etching is a plate from the landmark natural history series Die Säugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen, published by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in Erlangen starting in 1774. The illustration is notably derived from the famous "Dürer's Rhinoceros" tradition but updated with more naturalistic proportions and details typical of late eighteenth-century scientific observation.
Johann Christoph Bock was a German engraver and illustrator active in Nuremberg and Erlangen during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was a member of a prominent family of artists and became a principal contributor to major zoological and botanical works of the Enlightenment. His collaboration with Schreber on the "Säugthiere" series established his reputation for producing high-quality, scientifically accurate plates that became the standard reference for mammalian taxonomy in Europe. Bock's technique is marked by fine line work and a delicate application of colour that emphasizes the texture and form of exotic animal species.
