"Schellach" presents a detailed bird's-eye view of the estate and formal gardens of Schellach, located near Middelburg in Zeeland. This etching is a plate from Mattheus Smallegange's definitive topographical work Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, published in Middelburg and Amsterdam in 1696. The composition features the heraldic coats of arms of the owners in the upper corners and illustrates the symmetrical parterres, orchards, and architectural layout characteristic of Dutch garden design in the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator who dedicated much of his life to documenting the history and geography of the province of Zeeland. His monumental chronicle remains one of the most important historical sources for the region, noted for its extensive collection of high-quality engravings depicting towns, manor houses, and coastal defenses. Smallegange collaborated with skilled engravers to ensure the architectural and topographical accuracy of his plates. His work is highly valued by historians for preserving the visual record of Zeeland's Golden Age estates before many were lost to sea or redevelopment.
