Bilder Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1710) – View of Westhoven Castle and Waterlooze Werve – Etching (1696)
Beskrivning
"View of Westhoven Castle and Waterlooze Werve" illustrates two distinct manor houses of the province of Zeeland on a single page, each identified by an ornamental banner. The upper section depicts the moated Westhoven Castle near Domburg, while the lower section shows the estate of Waterlooze Werve with its surrounding orchards and outbuildings. This etching is a plate from Mattheus Smallegange's Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, published in Middelburg and Amsterdam in 1696. The work is fundamentally significant as it provides a detailed visual catalog of the architectural heritage and land management of the Dutch Golden Age.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator who dedicated much of his life to documenting the history and geography of the province of Zeeland. His monumental chronicle remains one of the most important historical sources for the region, noted for its extensive collection of high-quality engravings depicting towns, manor houses, and coastal defenses. Smallegange collaborated with skilled engravers to ensure the architectural and topographical accuracy of his plates. His work is highly valued by historians for preserving the visual record of Zeeland's Golden Age estates before many were lost to sea or redevelopment.
