Bilder Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1727) – View of the Khaju Bridge in Isfahan – Engraving (1711)
Beskrivning
"Pont Hassan-Abaet" illustrates the Khaju Bridge in Isfahan, Persia, spanning the Zayande River with its characteristic two-tiered arcades and central pavilions. The scene features figures on horseback and pedestrians along the riverbanks, documenting the architectural grandeur of the Safavid dynasty during the reign of Shah Abbas II. This engraving is from the work Voyages de Corneille le Brun par la Moscovie, en Perse, et aux Indes Orientales, published in Amsterdam in 1711, which provided one of the most accurate visual records of Persian architecture and society in the early eighteenth century.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch artist, traveler, and author who spent several decades exploring the Middle East, Russia, and Southeast Asia. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he was a trained painter who prioritized drawing from life to ensure the highest possible level of topographical and ethnographic accuracy. His published travelogues were celebrated across Europe for their detailed copperplate engravings that visualized remote civilizations for a Western audience. De Bruyn's work remains an essential primary source for historians studying the cultural and architectural heritage of the regions he visited.
