Bilder Marten de Vos (1532–1603) – Christ Blessing the Little Children – Engraving (1585)
Beskrivning
"Sinite parvulos, et nolite eos prohibere ad me venire: talium est enim regnum caelorum" illustrates the biblical narrative of Suffer the Little Children, where Christ welcomes and blesses several infants and young children brought to him by their mothers. The composition features the apostles observing the scene in the background, while the foreground is filled with dynamic figures of mothers and children in various poses of reaching and embrace. This engraving is from the work Thesaurus sacrarum historiarum veteris et novi testamenti, published in Antwerp in 1585 by Gerard de Jode, which served as one of the most significant and widely distributed visual bibles of the late sixteenth century.
Marten de Vos was a leading Flemish painter and draughtsman who became a central figure in Antwerp art after the death of Frans Floris. He traveled extensively in Italy, where he was influenced by the Venetian school and the works of Tintoretto, before returning to Flanders to establish a highly productive workshop. He was a prolific designer of prints, providing hundreds of compositions for major publishers that were disseminated throughout Europe and the Americas. His style is characterized by a refined Mannerist elegance and a clear, narrative approach that made his religious and allegorical imagery foundational to the development of Northern Baroque art.
