Beskrivning

"A Chart of the S.E. Part of Terra del Fuego including Strait Le Maire and part of Staten Land" illustrates the southern tip of South America, featuring a detailed nautical chart and an inset "Plan of Success Bay." The upper half of the engraving displays four panoramic coastal profiles, or "views," showing the mountainous terrain of the coastline as seen from the HMS Endeavour at sea. This engraving was published in London in 1773 by W. Strahan and T. Cadell as part of John Hawkesworth’s official account of Cook’s first voyage. The work documents the perilous passage through the Strait of Le Maire, providing vital navigational data and topographical observations for future maritime expeditions to the Pacific.

James Cook was a British naval captain, explorer, and cartographer who rose to prominence for his three monumental voyages of discovery across the Pacific Ocean. He was celebrated for his scientific approach to navigation and his ability to produce highly accurate charts of previously unmapped regions, including the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands. Cook's expeditions were multidisciplinary in nature, often carrying astronomers and naturalists to document the transit of Venus and global biodiversity. His contributions to the Royal Society and the British Admiralty fundamentally transformed the European understanding of world geography in the eighteenth century.
