Bilder Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Gotland and Sweden – Woodcut (1572)
Beskrivning
This work is a woodcut print featuring a small map and German text detailing the history and genealogy of a royal house. The small map at the bottom depicts the Baltic region, including Sweden and parts of Finland and Norway, with an emphasis on the historical homelands of the Goths. The work was an illustrative leaf from a German edition of Münster's influential cosmography.
Sebastian Münster was a renowned German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar. He is primarily famous for his "Cosmographia" (1544), one of the earliest German-language descriptions of the world and one of the most widely read books of the 16th century. His work was revolutionary for including not only maps but also historical, ethnographic, and geographical information, and was continuously revised and reprinted throughout the 16th century.
