Beskrivning

This print is an engraving that illustrates a popular moral theme, the Dance of Death, with Dutch text surrounding the image. The central image, set within a domestic interior, depicts a wealthy or noble man being confronted by the skeletal figure of Death, who is often shown taking him away, symbolizing the sudden and inevitable end of life regardless of wealth or status.

Jacob Cats was a famous Dutch poet, jurist, and moralist whose books, known as emblem books, were enormously popular and provided these illustrated moral lessons for a broad audience. While he was the author of the text and moral concepts, his name is the central attribution associated with the work's creation and publication, consistent with his widely circulated emblems.
