This engraving is a highly detailed topographical map titled "SUITE DU BRÉSIL Depuis la Baye de Tous les Saints Jusqu'à S. Paul" (Continuation of Brazil from the Bay of All Saints up to São Paulo). The map covers a large section of the Brazilian coastline and interior, detailing the known settlements, rivers, indigenous villages (Village des Indiens), and the relatively unknown interior designated as "Estendue de Païs désert et peu connu". The map includes a scale and geographic coordinates. The plate place its origin within Abbé Prévost's massive travel compilation, the Histoire générale des voyages.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer and cartographer who was appointed Ingénieur Hydrographe de la Marine (Hydrographic Engineer of the Navy). He was renowned for the accuracy and clarity of his charts and maps, which became the standard for mariners and explorers throughout the 18th century, documenting colonial interests across the globe.
