This engraving presents a detailed plan of the ancient Campus Martius in Rome, rendered in a bird's-eye perspective. The map illustrates the locations of numerous classical monuments, including temples, theaters, baths, and the Pantheon, with the Tiber River flowing along the right side. The composition is embellished with a large allegorical figure of Rome on the left and classical fragments in the lower right, including the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus.
Pieter Schenk the Elder was a German-Dutch engraver, publisher, and mapmaker based in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. He was highly regarded for his skill in producing maps, atlases, topographical views, and portraits, often collaborating with his business partner Gerard Valk. His work contributed significantly to the cartographic publications of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
