Beskrivning
This topographical plan is a detailed bird's-eye view map of the city of Geldern, Germany (historically Gelria), located in the Lower Rhine region. The plan illustrates the city's characteristic medieval street layout, surrounded by strong defensive walls, a moat, and surrounding fields. Notable features include the city's central church, and in the lower left, the detailed depiction of a detached fortification or castle. The map is embellished with two coats of arms in the upper corners and two figures standing in the lower foreground.
Frans Hogenberg was a German-Flemish engraver, etcher, and publisher who worked across Antwerp, Mechelen, and Cologne. He is best known for his contribution to the seminal work of urban cartography, the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, which he created with Georg Braun. His prints are recognized for their historical accuracy and artistic detail, providing invaluable records of European cities during the late 16th century.
