Bilder Lodovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – The Malicious on a Carriage, Done by the Great General Spinola – Engraving (1649)
Beskrivning
This historical engraving, titled The Malicious [Thing] on a Carriage, Done by the Great General Spinola, depicts a scene during the Eighty Years' War involving the Siege of Lochem (Lochum) in the Netherlands. The central subject shows a large wheeled carriage, possibly a symbolic representation of punishment or a piece of siege machinery, being maneuvered in a chaotic field setting, surrounded by soldiers, horses, and other vehicles. The text above and below the image describes an event where Spanish General Ambrogio Spinola forces the inhabitants to use their possessions to pay for the siege and retreat, referencing events around Lochem in August 1606.
Lodovico Guicciardini was a Florentine merchant, historian, and diplomat, best known as the author of the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (Description of all the Low Countries), first published in 1567. This work was immensely popular and was continually reissued throughout the 17th century. Many historical engravings illustrating events in the Low Countries, including scenes from the Eighty Years' War, were created for or included in later editions of his work, even though he was not the direct creator or engraver.
