Bilder Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – INDICE, NON SONITV (By a Sign, Not By Sound) – Engraving (c. 1650)
Beskrivning
This print is an example of an emblematic illustration, characteristic of the moral literature popular in the 17th century. The central circular engraving depicts Cupid (Amor) standing indoors, pointing toward a tall church spire visible through an open window. Curtains and a draped table frame the figure, who holds an arrow and stands next to a small stool. The image is surmounted by the Latin motto, "INDICE, NON SONITV" (By a Sign, Not By Sound). Below the image, two columns of Latin text elaborate on the moral, referencing classical writers like Claudian.
Jacob Cats was a famous Dutch poet, jurist, and moralist whose books, known as emblem books, were enormously successful throughout the 17th century and provided these illustrated moral lessons for a broad audience. While he was the author of the text and moral concepts, his name is the central attribution associated with the work's creation and publication, consistent with the previous emblems.
