This print depicts the dramatic biblical scene of Christ Crowned with Thorns (also known as the Mocking of Christ) from The Passion of Christ series. The composition is set within an architectural interior bustling with figures. Christ is shown being humiliated and pressed down by his tormentors, who are placing a crown of thorns on his head. Soldiers and other jeering figures surround the central action. In the background on the left, a scene, Pilate washing his hands or an earlier moment of the trial, is visible through a window or archway. Latin inscriptions below the main image offer biblical references or commentary on the event.

Philip Galle was a highly influential Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and print publisher who operated a significant workshop in Antwerp during the late 16th century. A student of Hieronymus Cock, he became known for his vast output of print series on religious, mythological, and historical subjects. Galle's engravings are celebrated for their technical precision and rich detail, which made them important vehicles for religious iconography across Europe.
