This large, double-page woodcut presents a detailed panoramic and topographical bird's-eye view of the Imperial City of Speyer, Germany. The print, titled "Die ReichStatt Speier," captures the extensive city skyline, including its massive cathedral ("Dom"), numerous other churches, and the city's defensive walls. The Rhine River ("Rhein flu.") flows across the foreground, with the surrounding landscape and smaller settlements also depicted. Below the image are keys and columns of German Fraktur text describing the city's landmarks and history.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and scholar. He is best known as the primary author and editor of the Cosmographia, one of the most influential and commercially successful books of the 16th century. First published in 1544, this work provided a comprehensive description of the known world and was renowned for its extensive use of woodcut illustrations, including numerous city views and maps.
