This large, double-page woodcut presents a detailed panoramic and topographical bird's-eye view of the city of Siena, Italy. The print, titled "Die Statt Sienne mit aller jhrer gelegenheit..." (The City of Siena with all its location...), captures the city's unique layout within its extensive defensive walls, set in the rolling Tuscan hills. Key landmarks, such as the Piazza del Campo and the prominent Siena Cathedral (Duomo), are clearly visible. The image includes keys identifying important sites and is a major illustration from the Cosmographia.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and scholar. He is best known as the primary author and editor of the Cosmographia, one of the most influential and commercially successful books of the 16th century. First published in 1544, this work provided a comprehensive description of the known world and was renowned for its extensive use of woodcut illustrations, including numerous city views and maps.
