Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of the City of Ayutthaya: Plan de la Ville de Siam – Engraving (c. 1750)
Beskrivning
This topographical city plan is titled Plan de la Ville de Siam (Plan of the City of Siam), but it specifically depicts Ayutthaya, Thailand, which was the capital of the Siamese Kingdom at the time of the plan's creation in 1686, as noted in the subtitle. The map shows the city's fortified walls, major streets, waterways, and significant landmarks, including the Royal Palace and the French Embassy, based on a survey by a French engineer. A detailed key (A-YY) in the upper section identifies these numerous features.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century, serving as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and the Royal Academy of Sciences. Bellin produced an enormous body of accurate and meticulously engraved maps and charts, contributing significantly to the era's major geographical publications, including Histoire Générale des Voyages by Abbé Prévost.
