Beskrivning
This ethnographic engraving illustrates a funeral ceremony of indigenous people, in the Americas. The scene depicts a large gathering of figures seated or kneeling in a circle around several vessels, suggesting a ritual or commemorative feast. In the background, a line of huts or tombs is visible, while two figures engage in a dance or display in the distance. The Latin title and the accompanying text describe the solemn rites and customs observed at the funeral of local rulers or priests.
Theodor de Bry was an eminent Flemish engraver, goldsmith, and publisher, best known for his meticulous engravings that documented the early European voyages to the Americas. His massive illustrated work, the Grands Voyages (America), published from 1590 onward, contained some of the earliest and most widely disseminated images of indigenous American life and customs, based on the sketches and reports of explorers.
