This topographical chart depicts the Cape Verde Islands (Carte des Isles du Cap Verd), located in the Central Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. The map is presented as a maritime chart, showing the individual islands, their principal towns, and the surrounding waters, with lines radiating from a central point indicating compass bearings (a rhumb line network). The title is enclosed in an elaborate, decorative cartouche in the lower left corner.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and was a member of the French Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing to major geographical publications, including his own multi-volume Petit Atlas Maritime, from which this map originates.
