Beskrivning

This hydrographic chart is titled Carte des Entrées de la Rivière de Scherrebro et Cerbera (Chart of the Entrances to the Scherrebro and Cerbera Rivers). The map depicts a coastal area, an island (Isle de Scherbero ou de Cerbera), and the intricate river mouths and sandbanks (Bancs de St. Anne) near the equator. The map includes soundings and navigational details crucial for maritime travel, characteristic of an 18th-century French nautical chart. The cartouche containing the title is ornately framed in the Rococo style.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and was a member of the French Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing to major geographical publications, including his own multi-volume Petit Atlas Maritime, from which this chart originates.
