Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of the Kingdom of Judah and Whydah (Africa) – Engraving (c. 1753)
Beskrivning
This topographical map is titled Carte du Royaume de Juida, ou Whidah (Map of the Kingdom of Judah, or Whydah). The map depicts a coastal region of West Africa, specifically the area around the historical Kingdom of Whydah (Ouidah) in modern-day Benin. The map details the coastline, river system (including the River of Jakin and the River of Juida), and the low-lying terrain, with the Road of Juida (Rade de Juida) shown with two ships in the foreground. This region was a significant center for the slave trade, making this a valuable historical document of European engagement in West Africa.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and was a member of the French Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing to major geographical publications, including his own multi-volume Petit Atlas Maritime, from which this map originates.
