Beskrivning

This topographical city plan is titled Plan de la Ville de Cochin (Plan of the City of Cochin), depicting the port city on the Malabar Coast of India. The map illustrates the fortified central colonial town, its grid street layout, and the surrounding areas, including the intricate network of backwaters and the island formations in the harbor. The presence of a sailing ship and a compass rose emphasizes the city's importance as a major trading and maritime center.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and was a member of the French Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing to major geographical publications, including his own multi-volume Petit Atlas Maritime, from which this map originates.
