The map illustrates the island's distinctive shape, showing its rugged terrain, dense vegetation, and coastal settlements. Navigational lines radiate from a central compass point. The title is framed within an elaborate, rococo cartouche in the upper right corner.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and was a member of the French Académie des Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing to major geographical publications, including his own multi-volume Petit Atlas Maritime, from which this map originates.
