This topographical map is a detailed plan of the District of Tranquebar (Tharangambadi), located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Tranquebar was a Danish colony, and this map details the area's geography, including a river system flowing through the region, fields, wooded areas, and settlements. An elaborate key in the upper left corner provides explanations for the various symbols used on the map.

Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles, generally known as the Abbé Prévost, was a highly prolific French author, historian, and cleric of the Enlightenment. Though primarily a writer, he was the editor and chief author of the monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels, 1746–1759). This vast work compiled global travel accounts and was illustrated by hundreds of detailed engravings, such as this one, which documented foreign views based on travelers' reports.
