Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century, serving as the official hydrographer for the French Navy and the Royal Academy of Sciences. Bellin produced an immense and critically acclaimed body of accurate maps and charts, contributing views and plans to major geographical publications, including Histoire Générale des Voyages by Abbé Prévost, from which this plate originates.
