This dramatic biblical engraving depicts The Burial of the Dead, one of the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy. The scene is set within a large subterranean cave or catacomb, where numerous figures are gathered around a corpse being prepared for burial on a shrouded bier. The setting is crowded and solemn, with men carrying tools and torches. Latin inscriptions beneath the image provide commentary on the scene.
Johann Sadeler I was a key member of the Sadeler dynasty, a prominent family of Flemish engravers, publishers, and print dealers active during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, working primarily in Antwerp and later Venice. He collaborated extensively with leading Antwerp artists. Maerten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draughtsman from Antwerp, known for his prolific output of religious subjects and designs for engravings, including popular series illustrating biblical narratives and allegorical themes, such as the Works of Mercy.
