Bilder Jean François de Galaup, Comte de Lapérouse (1741–c. 1788) – Map of the French Harbor (Alaska) – Engraving (c. 1797)
Beskrivning
This topographical map is titled Plan du Port des Français (Plan of the French Harbor), located on the North West Coast of America (Alaska, near Glacier Bay). The map details the harbor's intricate geographical features, including two main bays (Western Bay and Eastern Bay), surrounding hills rendered with distinctive topographical shading (hachures and mounds), and the location of The Harbour and The Road (roadstead). The map includes precise latitude and longitude measurements, indicating it was produced during a major scientific voyage.
Jean François de Galaup, Comte de Lapérouse, was a highly regarded French naval officer and explorer. He was commissioned by King Louis XVI to lead a major scientific and geographic voyage around the world (1785–1788). Although the expedition was lost at sea near the Solomon Islands in 1788, reports and maps, like this one detailing his stop in Alaska, were sent back earlier. This print comes from the official account of his voyage, published posthumously.
