Bilder Abbé Antoine François Prévost – Map of Africa - the Coast of Guinea – Engraving (Circa 1747)
Beskrivning
This detailed topographical map depicts a section of the Coast of Guinea, West Africa, spanning the area from the River Sierra Leona up to Cap des Palmas (Cape Palmas). The map is centered on coastal geography, identifying various "pays" or territories, including Pays de Silm Monou, Pays de Krouhance Monou, and Folnis ou Kirou Monou. An inset map, titled "Carte de la Riviere de Sestre," provides a magnified view of the mouth of the Cestos River, detailing shoals and local settlements like Ville Mon Bon, a crucial feature for navigation in the region. The print comes from the influential multi-volume travel and geography compilation, Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels).
The compilation of Histoire Générale des Voyages was initiated and edited by Abbé Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763) and was published in parallel French and Dutch editions in the mid-18th century. It served as a comprehensive resource detailing world geography, exploration, and ethnography for the Enlightenment-era European audience. Many of the maps and views, including those of the African coast, were either created by or engraved by notable cartographers and artists of the period, such as Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and Jakob van der Schley.
