This highly detailed map depicts the Central American provinces of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, illustrating the region's geography between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It shows the prominent Lake Nicaragua ("Lac de Nicaragua"), rivers, mountain ranges, and named indigenous territories, including the "Mosquitos" coast. Numerous towns, settlements, and ports, such as Port St. Jean, Leon, and Cartago, are identified.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (M. B. Ing. de la Marine) was the preeminent French cartographer and Hydrographer to the French Navy during the 18th century. His meticulous work prioritized geographical accuracy and functional design, distinguishing him in the age of Enlightenment cartography. This map is a plate from the quadrupeds section of the encyclopedic collection, Histoire Générale des Voyages (published from 1746 onward), compiled by Abbé Antoine François Prévost, which served as a primary European source for world geography and ethnography.
