This nautical map depicts the Bay of Saint Helena (Baye de Sainte Helene), located on the Atlantic coast of South Africa, north of Cape Town. The map provides essential navigational information, including depth soundings in the bay, coastal profiles showing mountainous terrain, and key points for sailors. This print is  a plate from the influential French travel and geography compilation, Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels).

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was the most important French hydrographer of the 18th century. He served as the official Hydrographer to the French Navy and was renowned for the technical precision and functional style of his maps. His extensive contributions to the Abbé Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages (published from 1746 onward) helped define the era's cartographic record of coastal regions around the globe. He died in 1772.
