Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was the most important French hydrographer of the 18th century. He served as the official Hydrographer to the French Navy and was renowned for the technical precision and functional style of his maps. His extensive contributions to the Abbé Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages (published from 1746 onward) helped define the era's cartographic record of coastal regions around the globe. He died in 1772.
